Our Story

The Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival was founded in 2015 by violinist Sasha Callahan, cellist Leo Eguchi, and business and arts leader Eve Callahan.

Like so many of the wineries that shape the region, the Festival is a family endeavor that brings the best of the world’s stage to our Valley.

Sasha, Leo, and Eve conceived of the Festival as a celebration of the abundance and creativity of this special part of the world, and a desire to contribute to the cultural richness of this place. We aim to carry on the spirit of those mavericks who planted the first vines here - folks who chose to work together instead of compete, and to create beauty and community, sharing ideas, knowledge and craft to create something truly unique.

Artistic Vision

From the beginning, Sasha and Leo were inspired by the connections between wine and music — both centuries old traditions that honor the knowledge and artistry passed down through generations, but which also require reinvention and responsiveness to our changing world. We reflect this in our programming philosophy, which is built on similar values you would look for in your favorite glass of Willamette Valley Pinot — a richness that engages you deeply, a bright sense of joy in the moment, delightful surprising notes that move your emotions in unexpected directions… above all else, a sense of balance.

With each festival program, Artistic directors Sasha Callahan and Leo Eguchi aim to create a musical feast that makes space for delight, wonder and introspection… experiences that open doors into our shared human experience. We celebrate the great composers of the past, yet like to imagine them in dialogue with brilliant minds that reflect the world we live in — Beethoven deep in conversation with Caroline Shaw, Mozart playing pool with Kenji Bunch, Ravel having a glass of wine with Kevin Day…

With sharing a great string quartet as with sharing a bottle of fine wine, we love those fleeting communal moments that bring us together around something beautiful. We believe passionately that this special form of connection is more needed today than ever.

Can’t attend? Support inclusive musical experiences by contributing to the festival.
